Food manufacturers can put GMO labels on their products in 2020. Large manufacturers need to disclose detectable bioengineered ingredients by 2022, and attorneys and analysts think many will wait until the last minute. Many companies have already started labeling their products and support this national labeling standard. The debate over GM labeling, at both the federal and state levels, has historically focused on five issues: (1) public opinion; (2) the legality of labeling requirements; (3) the risks and benefits of GM foods; (4) the costs and burdens of GM labeling; and (5) consumer choice. I believe the Food Industry and Food Professionals care about consumers and their right to know how their food was grown and processed. But there is so much misinformation and consumer misconceptions about GMs. Genetically modified (GM) foods provide a classic example of the challenges that society and individuals face in evaluating new technologies . The down side for the industry is that food labeling programs can entail significant costs to industry and society that must be carefully weighed against the benefits such labeling could generate. Few benefits will accrue to a labeling program unless the information conveyed to the consumer is viewed as credible and adequate.
